On 31 July 2026, the Pacific nation Nauru officially adopted the name "Republic of Naoero", reflecting the traditional pronunciation in its national language. Parliament passed a constitutional amendment in May 2026; a planned referendum was later dropped by President David Adeang. Dr Dnyandeo Yashwantrao (D.Y.) Patil, a noted educationist and former Governor, died on 4 August 2026 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, aged 90; he was born on 22 October 1935. He served as Governor of Tripura (2009-13) and Bihar (2013-14) and held additional charge of West Bengal. He received the Padma Shri in 1991 for education and social service. He founded the D.Y. Patil Group, which runs more than 180 educational institutions and seven deemed universities across India. He was earlier Mayor of Kolhapur and a Maharashtra MLA.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Youth Centre, called Viveka Smaraka, at the Sri Ramakrishna Ashram in Mysuru, Karnataka, on 1 August 2026 (Saturday).
